F-road ready: which 4x4s actually handle the highlands
A practical look at the 4x4s built for Iceland's F-roads — not the ones marketing departments claim are.

F-roads are not optional gravel. They include river crossings, sharp lava, and stretches with no signal for hours. The wrong vehicle is a tow bill waiting to happen.
What "F-road ready" actually means
- Genuine low range (not a software simulation)
- Ground clearance of at least 220 mm
- All-terrain tyres, not summer road tyres
- A snorkel if you're crossing rivers above wheel-arch depth
- Recovery gear and the knowledge to use it
Five 4x4s that pass
- Toyota Land Cruiser 250 — the gold standard. Boring, expensive, and unbreakable.
- Land Rover Defender 110 — capable and comfortable. Reliability has improved but is still not Toyota-grade.
- Suzuki Jimny — tiny, brilliant, and surprisingly capable. Limited by short wheelbase and small fuel tank.
- Ford Bronco — newly available imports; capable but parts can be a wait.
- Jeep Wrangler Rubicon — purpose-built. Fuel economy is awful, off-road ability is unmatched in its price class.
A note on EVs in the highlands
A Tesla Model Y will technically reach Landmannalaugar in summer. We do not recommend it. Until charging exists in the interior, a hybrid or diesel 4x4 is the responsible choice for deep highland trips.
Final word
Never drive an F-road alone in your first season. Convoy with experienced drivers, tell someone your route, and check road.is the morning you go.
