Highland 4x4 prep for 2026: what to fit before you cross the first river
F-roads open late June. If you're planning Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk or Askja next summer, the prep starts now — here's the checklist.
Highland 4x4 prep for 2026: what to fit before you cross the first river
Iceland's F-roads typically open between mid-June and early July depending on snowmelt. Insurance claims data from 2025 shows undercarriage damage and water ingress are still the top two causes of write-offs in the highlands — almost all of them on the first week of the season.
Minimum vehicle spec
- High clearance — 200mm+ ground clearance, not a soft-roader crossover. Suzuki Jimny, Dacia Duster 4x4, Land Cruiser, Defender, modified Hilux.
- Low-range gearbox for anything past Landmannalaugar.
- All-terrain tyres (BFG KO2, Cooper AT3) — not summer road tyres.
- A snorkel if you're crossing anything more than knee-deep.
What to install before June
- Skid plates — engine, gearbox, fuel tank. River-bed rocks don't care about your warranty.
- Recovery points front and rear, properly bolted to the chassis.
- Diff breathers extended above the air-box line — cheap, prevents oil contamination.
- Dual-battery setup if you're sleeping in the car; the second one runs the fridge without killing your start battery.
What to carry
- 20m kinetic recovery rope (not a tow strap)
- Two D-rings rated 4.75t+
- A snatch block — turns a tug into a pull
- Tyre deflator and a 12V compressor
- Personal Locator Beacon if you're going solo past Sprengisandur
River crossings — the bit that wrecks cars
Walk it first. If you can't walk it, don't drive it. Cross at the widest, shallowest, slowest section, in low range, second gear, no clutch dipping. Keep a steady bow wave. If you stall, get out — restarting under water hydrolocks the engine and your insurance won't cover it.
